Confirmation

Requirements and General Information

Each student will hereby be referred to as a Confirmation Candidate

The following information is required BEFORE WE BEGIN CLASSES!

  • The Candidate and his/her Family are Registered Members of the Parish (if not, contact Carole Brown at 884-2105).

  • The Candidate needs his/her Baptismal Record from the original church where the baptism took place.  If baptized here, then simply let us know in writing.

  • The Candidate must have received First Communion (if not at SFDS, please submit First Communion certificate).

  • The Candidate must have continuous and sequential participation throughout the years and must attend sessions through the Junior High years 6 and 7 with special attention to attendance in Year 8.

  • The Candidate must be registered with the Office of Religious Education (if you have not received the forms and information, contact Karen Paul at 885-3639 x16).

  • Each Confirmation Candidate is to decide upon a Confirmation name.  Details will be provided at the parent-candidate meeting on August 23rd at 7pm in the Church.

  • Each candidate is to choose a Confirmation Sponsor who is in good standing with the church.  A sponsor may not be the candidate’s parent.

  • The Sponsor must return the completed Sponsor Form with the signature of his/her parish priest along with the official Parish Seal.   If your sponsor is a member of St. Francis de Sales, simply indicate that on the sponsor form and we will take care of the rest.  Click here for a printable Sponsor Form document.

Mass Attendance:

  • All candidates must attend the special Mass of Enrollment on Sunday, September 12th at 11:00am.  At this Mass, each student’s name will be said aloud.  The candidate will receive a document, then sign it and hold on to it during mass.

  • Weekly attendance will be recorded via a sign-in sheet beginning with the Enrollment Mass on September 27th.  There is a small table to the left as you enter the lobby.  Simply HI-LITE your name.   And if you sit in the Parish Center, do not forget to sign in!!   If you visit another parish, get a bulletin and give it to your teacher.  Weekly Mass attendance is required!

Class and Generations Of Faith Attendance:

  • Since this is an intensive one-year course, we must expect full attendance.  If a candidate is unable to attend class due to special circumstances, the parent is asked to call our Religious Education Secretary in advance.

  • Generations Of Faith:
As part of the requirements for Confirmation, each candidate must attend ALL of our GOF sessions
We are certain that Generations Of Faith will be a very enjoyable and enriching time for all members of the family who are able to attend.

Service Hours:

  • Each candidate is required to perform 12 service hours to be completed BEFORE the final interview.
There will be a number of opportunities to provide service, both here at the parish and elsewhere.  Please note that service done away from the parish is only at pre-determined places and times - that is, one cannot perform service somewhere on their own and then request credit.

  • If you choose to perform hours this summer, it is your responsibility to obtain permission from Fr. Andrew
    and to
get the hours recorded on the proper blue forms.

  • You CANNOT combine your Confirmation service hours with your High School or other organization
    service hours.

  • You will receive notices for services hours via email throughout the year.

Written Assignments:

  • Details on written assignments will be given during class.  PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE COMPLETE AND ON-TIME.  Late assignments cause an additional and unncessary burden to our staff.  We ask your cooperation.  Thank you!

  • Some chapters may require a hand-written essay based on the lesson of the day.  We will give you time during class to write those essays.  You may take them home to complete them if needed.

Sacrament of Reconciliation:

  • The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered to the Confirmation Class during the Lenten Season of 2011.

Confirmation Retreat:

  • Each Candidate is required by diocesan policy to attend a retreat.  The retreat will be held September 2011.

Final Interviews:

  • Final interviews are to be scheduled in May 2011.  Details will be provided at the meeting on August 23rd and during class.
